A leading heavy civil contractor based in Central Virginia. Specializing in excavation, site development, demolition, VDOT snow and ice control program and construction waste services. Our work spans commercial, residential, and industrial markets. The company has a strong operational foundation, a solid backlog, and a reputation for dependable performance.
With annual revenues approaching $50 million, we are preparing for our next phase of growth. We are seeking a Chief Financial Officer to help us evolve from a high-performing contractor into a scalable, acquisition-ready enterprise.
Position Summary
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will be a key member of the executive team, reporting directly to the President. The CFO will provide leadership across all aspects of finance, including strategy, budgeting, accounting, job costing, forecasting, and risk management. They will also play a pivotal role in positioning the company for mergers, acquisitions, and future growth initiatives. This is both a strategic and operational role, requiring a hands-on leader who can partner closely with operations and ownership.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead financial planning, budgeting, and long-range forecasting
• Oversee job costing, WIP tracking, margin analysis, and reporting
• Develop executive KPI dashboards and lead monthly financial reviews
• Manage accounting operations, internal controls, and audit readiness
• Enhance systems: ERP, business intelligence, and reporting infrastructure
• Build financial models for capital investment, growth planning, and acquisitions
• Lead banking, bonding and insurance relationships
• Support or lead M&A deal modeling, diligence, and integration activities
• Partner with the President and VP of Operations as a key strategic advisor
• Mentor and elevate the finance and accounting team
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in a senior financial leadership role within construction, industrial services, or a related industry. They will be analytical, hands-on, and adaptable, with a proven ability to lead through change and drive financial performance in growing organizations.
• 10+ years of progressive finance experience, including senior-level leadership
• Strong background in construction, job costing, WIP reporting, and GAAP compliance
• Experience with M&A, capital strategy, and financial modeling
• Technologically fluent with ERP and reporting system implementation experience
• Excellent communicator with strong business acumen and leadership presence
• CPA and/or MBA preferred, but not required
